President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, declaring the party ready and united to “renew its covenant” with Nigerians ahead of the 16 January 2027 election.
The President told council members that the work of the past term would only be complete with victory at the polls. “No one gets credit for an incomplete assignment until you deliver the next election,” he said, urging each member to deliver their polling unit.
He cited the Atlantic City project in Lagos as proof that ambitious goals can be met.
Let the coming election be a contest of ideas, records, and policies.
Ward by ward
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, said the council would canvass for votes ward by ward, local government by local government and state by state. “Let the coming election be a contest of ideas, records, and policies,” he said.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum and serves as secretary of the campaign council, said the campaign would be issue-based. He credited the President with ending the petrol subsidy and multiple exchange rates, telling him: “You were the only one who chose to end them.” Uzodimma cited growth of 4.43 per cent, up from 4.23 per cent.
Support across party lines
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, backed the President’s re-election. “Previous administrations identified our problems, but did not tackle them,” Wike said. He has been named the Tinubu campaign coordinator for Rivers State and the FCT.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo also pledged their support. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Ibrahim Masari; and the elder statesman Tanko Yakassai all backed a second term for the President.
The council’s Director-General is Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who has been on a consultative tour that has included meetings with the Emirs of Gwandu, Katsina, Daura and Zaria.
Days after the inauguration, Yari released the party’s nationwide rally timetable, which begins with a flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday 24 October and ends with a grand finale in Lagos on 9 January 2027.
