Coastal highway: Section One complete, Section Two due by mid-November, says Umahi

The Works Minister rejects claims the Lagos–Calabar project has been abandoned, saying surveying is under way along the Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers axis.

Section One of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway has been constructed and the 55-kilometre Section Two is progressing towards completion by mid-November 2026, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said.

Section One, which runs for 47.47 kilometres in Lagos, is the first completed stretch of the coastal road, a flagship infrastructure project of the Tinubu administration.

“Not abandoned”

Umahi denied that the project had been abandoned. He said surveying work is under way along the Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers axis of the route.

The first 30 kilometres of the highway were opened to traffic on 12 December 2025, according to the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

Taken together, Sections One and Two cover more than 100 kilometres: 47.47 kilometres in the first section and 55 kilometres in the second.

Delivering big projects

The President has made delivery of large projects part of his campaign message. At the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council on 14 October, he cited the Atlantic City project in Lagos as proof that ambitious goals can be achieved, and told party members that “no one gets credit for an incomplete assignment until you deliver the next election.”

The coastal highway is designed to link Lagos with Calabar along Nigeria’s southern coastline, passing through the Niger Delta states where the minister says surveying is now taking place.

If the mid-November target is met, Section Two will be completed while the APC’s rally programme is under way. The campaign’s schedule includes stops in the capitals of all four states the minister named: Port Harcourt on 7 November, Benin City on 12 November, Asaba on 12 December and Yenagoa on 15 December.
